Salmo trutta
Originally from Europe, the brown trout is now found worldwide and is highly prized by fly fishers. Known for being wary and difficult to catch, it challenges even experienced anglers. Brown trout are found in cold, clear streams and rivers, and some populations migrate to large lakes or even the sea (sea trout). Their beautiful golden-brown coloration with red and black spots makes them one of the most visually striking fish.
Cold, clear rivers and streams, especially those with good cover. Also found in large lakes and, in some areas, migrate to sea.
Aquatic and terrestrial insects, crayfish, worms, small fish, and frogs
Least Concern globally, though some native European populations face pressure
