🐟 Body Shape & Size
Fish body shape is the single best starting clue. Is it torpedo-shaped like a tuna? Flat and round like a sunfish? Elongated like an pike? Deep-bodied species are often slow cruisers, while streamlined fish are built for speed. Measure the length if you can — it's critical for species that look alike at different life stages.
🎨 Color & Pattern
Color patterns are like fingerprints for fish. Look for vertical bars (like on a yellow perch), horizontal stripes (like a largemouth bass), or spots (like a rainbow trout). Note that colors can change based on spawning season, water conditions, and stress levels.
