Oncorhynchus mykiss irideus
The steelhead is the sea-run form of the rainbow trout and is considered by many anglers to be the ultimate freshwater game fish. Spending 1–3 years feeding in the Pacific Ocean before returning to their birth streams to spawn, steelhead grow much larger than resident rainbow trout. Their power, speed, and leaping ability — combined with the dramatic wilderness settings where they are found — have inspired generations of anglers and writers.
Born in coastal rivers and streams from Northern California to Alaska; migrates to the Pacific Ocean. Also introduced to the Great Lakes (Great Lakes steelhead).
In ocean: crustaceans, squid, herring, and small fish. In freshwater: limited feeding.
Varies dramatically by river — some runs are listed as Endangered or Threatened under the ESA
